The History of Drag Racing

The Birth of Drag Racing

Drag Racing began on the dry lake beds of Southern California in the 1930′s and then gone after old abandoned air fields. There wasn’t much organization or rules then, in the late 1940′s Wally Parks helped form the Southern California Timing Assn. and the racers started competing contrary to the clock, quite simply these were now able to see who had been the fastest not only the fastest.

American Hotrod Assn.

Inside the infant stages of Drag Racing there are two main bodies, The A.H.R.A ( American Hot Rod Association) along with the N.H.R.A ( National Hot Rod Association). The A.H.R.A was founded in 1955 and lasted until 1984 they drew the bigger names with the sport to start with simply because they paid out a lot more money on the Winners and in addition they had more races on their own schedule held at various tracks around the world. A lot of the racers you are aware today got their come from the A.H.R.A, Don “the Snake” Purdhomme, John Force, Don “Big Daddy” Garlits and Gene Snow among others. John Force actually won his first Funny car Championship with all the A.H.R.A in their last year of existence 26 years ago.

National Hot Rod Assn.

The National Hotrod Assn. was formed in 1951 by Wally Parks, and with this came the protection rules and regulations how the sport was desperately wanting. Their first organized race had not been until 1953 in Pomona, California on the L.A. County Fair Grounds. They did not have their first National Event until 1955 in Great Bend, Kansas and their second National Event failed to show up until 1961 it absolutely was located in Indianapolis and known as the Winter Nationals. It turned out the norm for your Racers to run both A.H.R.A and N.H.R.A events in those early years of competition.

Earlier years were so exciting, there was clearly no dialing-in or breaking-out, you merely ran as Quick and Fast as the car would run. There are the fantastic Gas Cars, Modified Cars, Factory Experimental, Super Stock, Dragsters and Funny Cars. Then there have been the A/G Supercharged cars of Stone, Woods & Cook, K.S.Pittman, Big John Mazmanian, Jr. Thompson or anything else. Major sponsorship was non-existent apart from the Factory cars called Factory Experimental (FX), simply operated out of your hip pocket, it absolutely was a payg World.
